If you want to test the other stuff (nitrate and glycol) you need the Acustrip CTS-3 three-way test kit, which is Ford Rotunda 328-00001. In that case, the kit to use is Acustrip R171, which is Ford Rotunda part 328-00008.Īlternately, you could probably use Acustrip R132, which seems to be a simplified Reserve Alkalinity test designed specifically for carboxylate based extended life antifreeze. There are two drains on the front of the radiator, one on the left and one on the right.Īgain, if the truck has never seen the wrong coolant or too much water, then you should only really need to test for Reserve Alkalinity. They're supposed to be done to both coolant loops separately (as the 6.7L essentially has two separate cooling systems, a primary and secondary). These checks are supposed to be done every 15,000 miles or 600 hours, whichever comes first. Note that they say the coolant can only be revitalized twice before needing replacement. If carboxylates fall below the appropriate range they say to revitalize the coolant with Motorcraft VC-12 Specialty Orange Coolant Revitalizer. This checks that all important carboxylate level. Again, if no one added water, you could probably skip that one as well.Īs long as there are no nitrates and the freeze/boiling point is good, the last check is a Reserve Alkalinity test. Unless you've added water to the coolant, the glycol content should stay between 40% and 60%. The glycol content needs to be between 40% and 60%. Next they want to check the freezing/boiling point of the coolant. If the truck was new when you bought it and no one has ever added the wrong coolant, you could probably skip this one. First, they want them to check for the presence of nitrates, if there are any nitrates it means someone added the wrong coolant and the system needs to be flushed. Unfortunately, these carboxylates still need to be checked to make sure they're within the appropriate levels.įord actually tells the dealer to do three checks (*besides a visual check). They prevent corrosion and cavitation by creating a buffer. These carboxylate corrosion inhibitors basically do the same thing. Instead newer coolants often rely mostly on neutralized versions of organic acids, called carboxylates. Why? Well, they found the stuff wasn't good for the environment, nitrates don't play well with aluminum, and also there is some talk of inorganics falling out of suspension and potentially causing other problems in the long term. Now, many newer Extended Life coolants don't have nitrites and other inorganics. That's why we used to test older diesels for things like, say, nitrate and molybdate level. Eventually these additives would get used up, fall out of suspension, get diluted, etc.and need to be replaced. They helped to prevent corrosion and cavitation. These additives were things like nitrite, silicate, phosphate, and molybdate. Sure, aluminized clamps are cheaper and do the same thing, but you ordered a stainless exhaust!
